The founding fathers of the United States of America created a government where the leaders were selected from the people, by the people, and for the people. The liberty and freedoms earned by the blood of so many came with warnings from our founding fathers.

• Benjamin Franklin said “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”
• John Adams said “Our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
• Samuel Adams said “Neither the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt.”

The corruption of people, corporations, and leaders across the world is impossible to ignore. The virtuous, moral, and principled citizens the Founding Fathers envisioned have been steadily replaced by corrupt individuals who have maneuvered themselves into positions of power.

People everywhere long for better leaders — they seek them, hope for them, and fight for them. The American Constitution placed power in the hands of the people, which means the path to better leadership and a better world begins with better people. Abraham Lincoln observed that "the strength of a nation lies in the homes of its people." It follows, then, that strengthening the people strengthens the nation. The Founding Fathers designed a government of virtuous and moral people, by virtuous and moral people, and for virtuous and moral people. If we want better leaders and a better world, we need more people who are virtuous and moral — people who understand and live by Universal Laws and Values.

Universal Laws and Values apply to everyone, always. The Law of Gravity governs every person without exception. So does the Law of Agency, which holds that my rights end where yours begin, and yours end where mine begin. But where exactly is that line? Consider this: if I choose to smoke and you choose clean air, and we are both standing at the same bus stop, whose right takes precedence? Does my right to smoke override your right to clean air, or does your right to clean air override my right to smoke?

Universal Values define that line. If I live by the values of Kindness and Respect, I will kingly respect your right to clean air and step away to smoke. If you live by those same values, you will honor my right to smoke and give me space to do so. When a society loses these values, that line disappears. And when the line disappears, we violate one another's rights — which then demands that a third party, whether a corporation or a government, step in to draw the line for us. That imposition erodes our liberty and freedom. This is precisely what Benjamin Franklin meant when he said, "Only virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." The more we abandon our values, the more we forfeit our freedoms, and the more we find ourselves in need of a master to govern our lives.
